CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs)

CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs) is the US Department of Education's taxonomy of standard terminology for workforce education programs throughout the United States. As more digits are added to a CIP code, it becomes more specific. A 2-digit CIP Code refers to programs within a broad career field. A 4-digit CIP code refers to programs within a career sector. A 6-digit CIP Code refers to instructional awards (degrees and/or certificates) relating to a specific occupation or job title. Based on the nature of the discipline, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) groups technical programs either at the 4-digit or 6-digit level.

For example, CIP code:
50 is Visual and Performing Arts.
50.04 is Design and Applied Arts.
50.0402 is Commercial and Advertising Art.
